National conference can’t transform Nigeria — Nwabueze
UMUAHIA—FOREMOST constitutional lawyer, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, has said that he was working hard to salvage the on-going national conference to give Nigerians a new constitution.
Prof. Nwabueze said that the national conference as currently structured could not give the nation a new constitution.
According to him, a national conference Nigerians need that can give them a new constitution is the one that has some legal basis, which has some legal framework.
Such conference, he explained, must have the competence to take legally binding decisions, especially the competence to adopt a constitution for this country, a constitution that was the supreme law of the land.
“That is not the kind of conference that is going now. But I said in a recent statement that the conference can still be salvaged, and that is what I am working on now to get something done to salvage the conference,” Nwabueze said.
Nwabueze, who spoke yesterday in Umuahia when he led a delegation of Igbo Leaders of Thought, to congratulate Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State as the new chairman of South East Governors’ Forum, said they were happy that Governor Orji was made chairman of the forum.
He said he led the agitation for a national conference because he believed that “we need it to transform our country into a new, better and united country.”
He, however, regretted that the current conference could not achieve that.
